A Whale Bleeds to Death at Sea World

>>> From "The Killing Tanks" by Gary Hanauer, Animals' Voice, Vol. 3 #4:

Sea World visitor Jim Barnes photographed Kandu in her death throes after she collided with another whale. While she was dying, Sea World employees—in a frantic effort to maintain the Park's public image—mopped up her blood from poolside. Sea World's official comment: "She did it to herself." Between 1965 and 1989, 15 of the 28 orcas in Sea World's "care" have died. In the wild orcas can live to be 100 years old. At Sea World, they're lucky to survive a decade.

....

Last year [1989], Kandu, mother of Baby Shamu, broke her jaw and bled to death after colliding with another orca during a routine performance.
